Why Golden Hour Is the Best Time for Outdoor Portrait Photography

If you’ve ever wondered why photographers often schedule outdoor sessions in the evening rather than the middle of the day, the answer is simple: light matters. In photography, lighting is everything, and the most beautiful natural light of the day happens during what we photographers call “golden hour.”

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky. During this time, the light becomes softer, warmer, and more flattering.  This creates the dreamy, glowing look you often see in professional portraits.

Here’s why golden hour is truly the best time for outdoor photos.

1. The Light Is Softer and More Flattering

Midday sunlight is very harsh. When the sun is directly overhead, it creates strong shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. This can make portraits look overly contrasted and less flattering.

During golden hour, the sunlight is diffused and gentle, which helps smooth skin tones and creates a more natural, flattering look. This softer lighting allows your features to appear more balanced and beautifully illuminated.

2. No Squinting or Harsh Shadows

One of the biggest challenges with shooting in bright midday sun is squinting. Clients often find themselves struggling to keep their eyes open comfortably when facing bright sunlight.  If you are wearing lash extensions, a shadow under your eyes will be present during midday sunlight.

Golden hour light is much easier on the eyes because the sun is lower and less intense. This allows you to relax, look natural, and enjoy the experience without constantly battling the brightness.

3. That Beautiful “Golden Glow”

Golden hour gets its name because the sunlight takes on a warm, golden tone. This warm color enhances skin tones and adds a romantic, glowing quality to photos that simply can’t be recreated with harsh midday light.

The result is portraits that feel soft, polished and timeless.

4. More Dimension and Depth

When the sun is lower in the sky, the light travels at an angle rather than straight down. This creates subtle highlights and shadows that add depth and dimension to images.

Instead of flat lighting, golden hour produces photographs that feel visually rich.  Think of the lower sun rays as nature’s own beauty filter.

5. A More Comfortable Experience

Especially during warmer months, scheduling sessions closer to sunset also helps avoid the hottest part of the day. This makes the session more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Clients can relax, move naturally, and focus on enjoying the moment instead of worrying about what the heat or bright sunlight is doing to their hair, makeup, and/or body perspiration.

Trusting the Timing

As photographers, we carefully schedule outdoor sessions based on the position of the sun. This allows us to capture you in the best possible lighting conditions while still ensuring there is plenty of daylight for your session.

The goal is always the same: to create images that look beautiful, natural, and timeless.

When you see that warm glow, soft light, and effortless look in professional outdoor portraits, there’s a good chance they were captured during golden hour.

And that’s exactly why we photographers love it.
